Jack was born in 1919 in Indiana. He attended high school at New Albany in southern Indiana. During his senior year at New Albany the Great Flood of 1937 happened.
After high school Jack moved to Compton, California, where he became a machinist working for a wage salary. Also while in Compton he was studying at college, but he only went for a year. It is possible that Jack moved out to California because one of his aunts lived out there. Soon after his years in Compton he came back to Louisville, Kentucky, where he then enrolled into the military. Prior to enrolling in the Army in October 1941 he worked as a machinist at Indiana Ordinance Works in Charlestown, Indiana.
